It feels like a month of simultaneously a lot happening and not much happening either. While I made progress with Writi-related things, I also didn’t get really into the things I actually meant to work on these last few weeks.

What’s New with Writi

Writi has some new friends! I’ve invited four people into the Discord server (but would love to have more if you’re interested) as founding users to help with alpha testing and to have as a sounding board for product decisions. It’s been nice being able to run ideas with other writers to make sure my priorities are aligned. I don’t have much else to share here as most of the work I did was maintenance/DevOps-related, but I’m almost done with the sprint message updates and hoping to be able to share that properly next time! But for now, here is the “design” for the Sprint Results message I put in front of my founding users to see what they thought:

This is pretty much what the Sprints Results message will end up looking like for now, but if you have any questions or thoughts you’d like to share, feel free to respond to this email!

Developer’s Log

So many tweaks here and there across the app’s code and cloud environment. My previous engineering roles were not DevOps roles, so it’s been an experience figuring all that out for myself and also being conscious of how much money it costs to run my app. It’s actually a little more than I expected for how small the app currently is (not that I had a basis for what I thought it should be), so I dug into places where I could make my code more efficient to save me some cents. It did work! Although, I got a little too aggressive in my approach and while I saved money, I introduced a bug that I will need to fix on my next prod push.

As I finish off the bot’s sprint message updates, I’m looking forward to digging into getting the user, auth, and admin services up and running. These will be for user preferences, projects, channel/server configuration, and more! With those implemented, I can also work on getting the web app integrated properly so users can log in and see all that in a browser.

The job hunt still progresses, and I’m slightly concerned one of the recruiters I was working with has actually turned into a ghost. Will I hear from them again? Who knows. I have some other opportunities in the pipeline, but it has been very slow with the holidays approaching. I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week???

As for tweaking things unrelated to code, I tweaked my neck pretty badly and it took me out for nearly a week. I’m okay now and back to being able to be vertical without gravity eventually winning out against my spine. I’m not even sure what I did to hurt it that badly 😖.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and finding time to write and/or partake in other hobbies!
